'Are You Not Entertained?' The Reason a Shortened Test Deserved Its Status as a Proper Test Match.

In a glass case on the elevated floor of the MCG sits a vibrant pink outfit worn by Robbie Williams. The concert in front of a hundred thousand spectators was hailed as a major hit.

It's possible you appreciate his music. Maybe you feel he is the ultimate present to music in history. You might take a reasonable stance, conceding that some hits are fantastic while others are awful.

The key argument is that entertainment can take many forms. You like what you like. There is not a single method to craft art or even Test cricket.

The Incomparable Variety of Test Cricket

The five-day game boasts peerless complexity. One struggles to think of another sport where the contest is so reliant upon external factors.

The weather, the session, the cricket ball – the variables are numerous. Crucially is the wicket.

If the format is an artistic pursuit, the strip is the blank slate on which the athletes paint their masterpiece.

A Broken-Down Battle: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between the old rivals was an abstract version of cricket, the established format dismantled and stuck back together in an unusual manner.

This is not a defence of the pitch which yielded a triumph and the second two-day Test of the series.

Allowing a thick layer on the surface, leading to a cascade of wickets falling in less than six sessions, is not a balanced duel between bat and ball.

A Rich Tapestry: The Essence of Test Cricket

But any notion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be footnoted as not a proper Test, is mistaken.

The format is a rich tapestry, a long history and still growing. At times, as seen at the MCG, the cricket ball moves excessively for the fast men. Sometimes, it spins sharply on a dry surface. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it spits like a cobra.

The thrillers are even more exciting owing to the time committed in other matches.

Problem Solving: The Real Challenge

Specific conditions are embraced more readily than others.

The contention in Melbourne was that the equilibrium was tipped too far towards the fielding side. That the top batters were hindered from showcasing their talents.

This level of cricket is about adapting to challenges – reading the conditions and adapting accordingly. The two highest individual innings were made by recognized batters. One side was less disciplined than the other, and thus lost.

Sheer Celebration: The Supporters' View

Try telling the devotees who have endured a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

Among the crowd of the ground, a sea of people waved their flags and created an atmosphere, generating a carnival vibe in a stronghold of national pride.

There was optimism as the fielding side dominated, momentum when the top order scored quickly, and unconditional love when the victory was achieved.

Contrasting Examples: The Variety of Test Matches

The venue has form with pitch problems. In the past, a Test there featured a strip with the excitement of a a non-event.

That fixture was a marathon, with minimal action and slow play. The two-day game and that previous match are polar opposites of the range – both are not the standard, yet value can be found in them.

Four Tests into the ongoing battle, it is the quick finishes that will be most remembered in the memory.

"It's not the death of Test cricket at all," commented a veteran. "Spectators who have been privileged to see these short time have been experienced some real entertainment. Different entertainment."

Signs of Progress: Looking Ahead

In the preparation to this Test, the leader spoke like a man carrying the enormous pressure on his shoulders.

The team delivered for him, bringing back the positive demeanor to his face.

Different players stepped up with key contributions. These are small positives, not nearly enough to guarantee long-term futures, but something to develop from.

At the very least, this triumph is added to other historic performances in meaningless games.

As the crowd slipped away into a glorious Melbourne evening, the squad gathered on the field to start their own enjoyment.

Savour the moment, men. You've earned this one.
