No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
